"Last week my wife, Suzan, and I spent an incredible couple of days in Mexico's Yucatán jungle visiting friends. Just a few hundred yards from Ek Balam, one of the most intriguing and archaeologically important Maya ruins in existence, we relaxed in a small eco-resort that our friends will soon make their permanent home.
Amid the cackling hens, the faint aroma of wood smoke, and the other sounds and smells of a bustling little jungle village settling down for the night, the conversation naturally turned to work—because like us, our friends also write about their lives and the lives of other expats they meet for International Living
It is our happy job to research and write about the best places on the planet for retirees, adventure seekers, and fellow explorers to live—like the little village next to the ancient ruins where we were chatting over cold beers at that very moment.
Which is why, when the evening conversation turns to work, for us that's a good thing. The work we do isn't a daily grind. It's a daily exploration of the world's best possibilities for us and others like us. It's a daily examination and explanation of the very lives we and other expats have chosen to live around the globe."

"Back in 2008, my wife, Diane, and I (and millions of others) were struggling to fight our way out of a darkening situation thanks to the financial crisis. My search for a solution led to a chance encounter with an article by International Living. I was stunned to learn of the numerous possibilities overseas and wanted to become more certain that we may be candidates for such a major transition. One night, after dinner, I told Diane what I had discovered. We made our plan that very night. That was the first night I slept well in months.
After a couple of years of having my freelance offerings accepted by International Living, I was asked to join the team as a correspondent—a position I've now enjoyed for several years. I am privileged to be one of the experts charged with providing the best, most accurate information available to our readers.
Each time I write a piece, I know that someone like my former self will read it, seeking their own solutions, and it's up to me to provide the most current and accurate information possible. That's the way it is with all of us on the IL team."
IL Vietnam Correspondent Wendy Justice…
"I was 51 when my husband, David, and I quit our jobs, sold our belongings, and left our home in California on what was to be a trip around the world. We bought one-way tickets to Hong Kong, and began our journey throughout eastern and southeastern Asia. We never imagined at the time that 13 years later, we would still be in Southeast Asia—not as travelers, but as expats who have become experts on our new home.
It was the diverse culture that first attracted us to this part of the world. We saw amazing landscapes, learned new customs, and sampled delicious, exotic foods. We visited temples built into the sides of cliffs in China, hilltribe villages in Thailand, tranquil rice paddies and vibrant modern cities in Vietnam, peaceful, uninhabited riverbanks in Laos, ancient Khmer ruins in Cambodia, and amazing, colorful festivals in Malaysia.
After living in Southeast Asia for so many years, we really can't imagine ever moving back to California. We're out of the rat race and our days are stimulating, affordable, and fun. It's the best lifestyle change we've ever made."
And IL Coastal Costa Rica Correspondent Kathleen Evans…
"When I first subscribed to International Living in the early 1990s, I never dreamed I would actually have the opportunity to write for them as a contributor several decades later.
I endured the brutal Chicago winters of my childhood and spent most of my adult years working as a sales executive in Austin, Texas. The latter years I imagined leaving the proverbial "corporate rat race" and slowing down my lifestyle in an exotic country on a beautiful beach. Little did I realize it was possible to make that dream a reality.
I retired from that sales career recently, and I'm now pursuing a life as a freelance writer and a first-time novelist. Costa Rica has given me a gift of time, seemingly slowing the clock and opening new doors both professionally and personally.
If I could give you one piece of advice it would be, start researching now! Do you want that life of which you have been dreaming? You can make it happen. Keep taking those baby steps and over time you will suddenly realize you have arrived."
These are just a few of our editors and correspondents, who you'll get to know well as you read your IL Daily Postcards,
They'll help you take those baby steps Kathleen talks about…steps that will eventually lead you to a life you could hardly have imagined before.
Bon voyage.
